Ethel McCraney - 1900 Census

Searching again on ancestry.com I find an Ethel McCraney with father William McCraney on 296 W. 5th Street, in the city of Dubuque, Iowa on 5 Jun 1900.

William is engaged in clam fishing, 46 years old, born in Feb 1854, in Iowa.  He has been married to Laura V. McCraney, born in West Virginia for 24 years and they have 6 children all still living.  Children listed with the family are Ethel A., age 14, born in Apr 1886; Estella J., born Jan 1888; Cliford M., born Sep 1891; and Edward R., born Sep 1893.  All of the children were born in Iowa.  Boarders listed with the family are Philip Gress? a scrap moulder, and interestingly, Theodore Gabriel, age 20, a paper hanger and painter.

Also listed is a separate family in the same house, James W. McCraney, age 19, engaged in clam fishing.  He is married for 2 years to Mamie R. McCraney, age 20.  They have a daughter, Bessie V., born in Apr. 1899.

William's father is born in New York and mother born in Iowa.  Laura's father was born in Pennsylvania and mother was born in Virginia.

So - Using the data collected from the 1925 census showing that Edith's maiden name was McCraney, I searched for birth information in Ancestry.com and it returned the following.

More info from the 1930 census on the Gabriels

By 1930 it appears John & Doris are renting some part of a home located at 2500 Washington Street that is owned by a Katie Stock, a 62 year old widow, born in Iowa - with parents born in Germany.  John is listed as being a machinist in the "Tank - Machine" industry.  It appears they have been married for 6-7 years, or around 1923-1924.  John's father is listed as born in Germany, mother in Virginia, both of Doris's parents show born in Iowa.  John was listed as working in the machine, manufacturing industry in the 1925 census.

John's parents and other siblings show living in a house being rented for $35 just a few blocks away at 2714 Washington Street.  Theodore is age 50, wife Ethel 43, with children, Theodore L., age 16, Helen D., age 18, Willard M., age 13, Virginia M., age 10, Leon E., age 8, Jane A., age 6, Joyce J., age 3 4/12, and Wayne A. age 1 10/12.  All of the children are born in Iowa.  Theodore and Ethel show being married for 26 years - or approximately 1904.  Ethel's parents are listed as father born in Minnesota, mother in West Virginia.  Theodore senior is listed as being a painting contractor and Theodore junior is listed as a tile setter.

John Gabriel & Doris Emerson - 1925 Census

John and Doris Gabriel are listed in the 1925 Dubuque County, Iowa Census as living at 2804 Jackson Street both being born in Iowa.  They are renting the place they are living in for $30 per month and also show living in Iowa their entire lives.  Both John and Doris completed an 8th grade education. John's father is listed as Theodore Gabriel age 49 born in Germany.  His mother is listed as Edith McCraney, age 39 born in Iowa.  Doris's father is listed as Charles Emerson, age 53, born in Iowa, but for some reason her mother is listed as John Hargrave, age 49 born in Iowa.  Not sure why this is the case, the next person in the census also appears to have an error on their mother's name - looks like it lists Wm Stevens.  John is affiliated with the Methodist E. church and Doris is affiliated with the Catholic church.

New Random Selection - John R. Gabriel

I decided to select another person to conduct random genealogy on after seeing my blogger logon info and realizing I had not done one of these in quite some time.

I used a random number site to pick numbers at http://www.randomizer.org/form.htm

Using it gave me the random number 15, which is Iowa from an alphabetic list.

So I then used the same random number generator, giving me 42,9,34,19,10.  This lead me to the #42 county using FIPS code list from Wikipedia being Dubuque.  From there I logged on to Ancestry and browsed the 1930 census for Dubuque and selected the 9th township, Julien, the 34th enumeration district, the 19th image and the 10th line on the image, giving me John R. Gabriel.  John appears to be born in Iowa, age 25 making him born about 1905, with father born in Germany and mother born in Virginia. 



Search for Ebenezer Avery in Canada

Since marriage record showed Ebenezer was Enos's father and census records show Enos immigrated to the US in 1862 - it made sense that Ebenezer showed show up in Canadian census in 1861. Ontario Genealogy Society appeared to have an index that showed the following record. Wife name Mary matches with marriage record and age of Enis Avery age 5 matches up pretty well with later census ages.
