Search for Ebenezer Avery in Canada

Since marriage record showed Ebenezer was Enos's father and census records show Enos immigrated to the US in 1862 - it made sense that Ebenezer showed show up in Canadian census in 1861. Ontario Genealogy Society appeared to have an index that showed the following record. Wife name Mary matches with marriage record and age of Enis Avery age 5 matches up pretty well with later census ages.

Imagine my surprise seeing that from this random search one of Albert's sisters married a Dingman. Granted Michigan has one the highest populations of Dingman's of U.S States, but still seems like a big coincidence.

Michigan Births 1867 - 1902

Listed on Sept 14, 1902 was May Avery - it appears there is a notation (aff. filed 3-2-64) that appears to correct the name to Mary Avery - record number 116, city of Gladwin.

Parents listed father Ed. Avery born Canada, occupation laborer and mother C. Avery birthplace Canada - date of record June 25, 1903. Same writing as the affidavid note above corrects names to Enos Avery and Clara Augusta Brady born in Germany. (1)

Research Plan:
Check Marriage records in FamilySearch for more Avery records.

Researching Census for Avery's

Using Heritage Quest thru the local library I attempted to find Avery's in the 1930 census, but I do not believe that the indexes are completed for this census year. So instead I searched the 1920 census for Avery surname in Gladwin County, Michigan.

There was one name listed, Enos Avery age 64, a farmer born in Canada, father born in New York, mother born in England. Enos immigrated from Canada to the U.S. in what looks like 1862. He is listed with wife Clara age 54, born in Germany, immigrated to US in 1881, both parents also born in Germany. (1)

All children listed are born in Michigan. Alvin age 22, May age 19, Mary age 18, Lincoln G age 15, Albert age 13, Ruth age 8 and Clara B. age 2.

Names ages and birthplaces match up with 1930 census. This seems to be a match.

Research Plan:1. Check online sources for births of Avery children and deaths, assuming Enos died between 1920 and 1930.

1. 1920 U.S. census, Gladwin County, Michigan, population schedule, Hay Township, enumeration district (ED) 26-13, sheet 2B, p. 211 (stamped), dwelling 49, family 49, Enos Avery household; digital image, Heritage Quest Online (http://persi.heritagequestonline.com : accessed 23 Jun 2009); citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm T625, roll 766.

Choosing a random person to research

I asked my wife to pick a random Midwest state, she said Michigan. Then asked my middle daughter to pick as I scrolled thru a listing of counties, she picked Gladwin County. My youngest daughter picked Hay Township from a listing of townships having images in the 1930 census. From this my middle daughter picked page 4 of 6 and my youngest picked number 23 from 1-50. This turned out to be a page numbered from 51-100 so I chose the 23rd line. That individual is Albert Avery age 23 born in Michigan, listed as a farm laborer, with father born in Canada and mother born in Germany.

Clara A. Avery is listed as the head of household with daughters Ruth, Clara and son Albert. (1) Clara is 64 years old, married for 21 years, born in Germany, with both parents born in Germany. Ruth is 19, Clara is 12. All children were born in Michigan.

Research Plan:
1. Check 1930 Census for Averys (and variants) in Gladwin County, Michigan.
